Unpacking the joy of vacation: Exploring the experiences of African Immigrants

Have you ever wondered why African immigrants party or jubilate excessively when they finally come back home?

Some even barely sleep just to visit old friends and catch up on unreplaceable memories they had made over the years. This is very understandable because looking at the not so favorable conditions presented to them in these Western countries.

For instance, most African immigrants leave for greener pastures. It is either for work or school, which will eventually lead to work. You know work brings about money hence the conditions of living drastically improve. However, while they are working, they lose a sense of having quality time to chill and relax, leading to high-stress levels.

My senior brother recently gave me a vivid picture of the situation I am painting for you. On our way to the barbering shop, he revealed the issues he faced once he worked in United Kingdom. According to him, he takes care of aged people, mostly between the ages of 70 and 100. These people have other mental problems ranging from autism and ADHD which have, in turn, contributed to their dilemma. Hence, they need constant care and support.

Aside he doing this kind of work at a care home. He also works in a restaurant, making it two jobs a day. He is wonderfully married with two children. Now, I hope you are getting my point much clearer. He barely has that kind of luxury to relax since he was there to improve his conditions of living and that of his family.

Hence, when he comes back for vacation, it’s always party after party till he goes back to the United Kingdom. Parents and siblings would always want to keep him in check, but understanding their situation is another reason that drives their behaviors (excessive enjoyment) down here.

For me, I do know it’s work work, and work hence even if they try to party, it’s on the low and besides they can’t be loitering about in someone’s country which can obviously be bad for them hence that is understandable.

My point here is that the situation abroad won’t get much easier in the coming years. Countries would tighten up immigration laws. Hence, Africans who successfully make it to these countries in such for a better life need to work and leave the merrymaking for later.
